Balancing Camogie and a Demanding Career
Many young athletes in Ireland, especially women, are choosing careers that allow them to pursue their ambitions in Gaelic Games. Teaching is one of the most common professions among those aiming for inter-county success, while self-employment or jobs with shift work are less common. Nursing, despite its many rewards, can be particularly challenging due to long hours, night shifts, and high physical and mental demands. These factors often conflict with the rigorous training schedules required for top-level sports.
Eimear Hayes, a defender for Armagh’s camogie team, has found a way to balance her demanding job as an A&E nurse at Daisy Hill Hospital with her sporting career. Her experiences offer valuable insight into how individuals can manage such dual commitments.
A Year of Sacrifice and Growth
In 2020, Hayes made the difficult decision to step back from camogie during the height of the pandemic. As a nurse working in the eye of the crisis, she felt it was not responsible to juggle both roles. This meant missing out on the All-Ireland title win by her teammates, but she has no regrets about her choice.
“It was tough, but I knew it was the right thing to do,” she said. “I was happy for my teammates, and I still am. It was a big sacrifice, but I had to make it.”
Despite this setback, Hayes remained committed to her sport. She has played in three previous finals, including the 2016, 2021, and 2022 championships, where Armagh narrowly missed out on victory. The team’s resilience has been evident, especially after coming close in recent semi-finals.
The Role of Supportive Management
One of the key factors in Hayes’ ability to maintain her career in both nursing and camogie has been the support from management. She praised the understanding and flexibility shown by her employers, which allowed her to continue playing without compromising her professional responsibilities.
“I’ve never felt like I was being asked to choose between work and camogie,” she said. “The management has always been very accommodating. They’ve never made me feel like I was missing out on something.”
This supportive environment has been crucial, especially with the arrival of new manager PJ O’Mullan, who brought a fresh perspective and higher standards to the team. His leadership has pushed players to perform at their best, creating a more competitive and professional atmosphere.
Experience and Team Dynamics
Hayes is one of the most experienced players on the team, having been part of the 2016 squad. With a significant number of players leaving the team since last year, her presence has been vital in maintaining continuity and stability.
“The turnover has been huge, but we’ve managed to get to this stage despite it,” she said. “It shows how strong the team is.”
Her experience has also helped younger players adapt to the increased pressure and expectations. While there was initial nervousness about impressing the new manager, the team has embraced the challenge and grown stronger as a result.
Personal Balance and Life Beyond Sport
Beyond her career and camogie, Hayes has also prioritized personal growth and travel. In 2022, she took a break from training to travel through Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and South America. This time away allowed her to recharge and return to the sport with renewed focus.
“Traveling was a great escape, but I always knew I’d come back to camogie,” she said. “It’s part of who I am.”
As she prepares for the All-Ireland final, Hayes remains grounded. She understands the value of relationships and the importance of enjoying the journey, whether it ends in victory or defeat.
Embracing the Moment
For Hayes, the opportunity to compete in the final is a privilege. She acknowledges the hard work and dedication that have brought her to this point, and she’s determined to give her all on the field.
“I’ve trained since November to be here, and I’m excited to see what happens,” she said. “Whether we win or lose, it’s a moment to cherish.”
She also recognizes the broader impact of the game on the community. The excitement and camaraderie surrounding the final are reminders of the joy that sport brings, even in the face of challenges.
Ultimately, Hayes’ story is one of balance, resilience, and passion. Her journey highlights the unique challenges faced by athletes who juggle demanding careers with their sporting ambitions, and the importance of support systems in making it all possible.
