In November 2023, Elon Musk’s company, xAI, entered the competitive world of artificial intelligence with the launch of its chatbot, Grok. Positioned as a “politically incorrect” alternative to what Musk describes as “woke” chatbots, Grok aims to carve out a unique niche in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, competing against established players like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The Features of Grok

Grok represents two interconnected concepts: it is both a large language model (LLM) and the chatbot that utilizes this model. Users can interact with Grok on Musk’s social media platform, X, where they can ask questions and receive responses. This integration allows Grok’s interactions to be more visible than those of its competitors, leading to increased public scrutiny.

Grok 4 is available to users through the Grok website and app for a subscription fee of $30 per month. A premium “Heavy” version is also offered at $300 per month, promising enhanced access to features. In addition to Grok 4, xAI plans to roll out specialized models focusing on coding and video generation later in the year.

The Introduction of Eve

Alongside Grok, xAI introduced a new voice for the chatbot named Eve, described as having a “beautiful British voice capable of rich emotions.” During the demonstration, Eve showcased her capabilities by engaging in light-hearted banter and even singing a whimsical opera about Diet Coke, adding a layer of personality to the Grok experience.

Training and Development of Grok

Grok’s LLM is trained using public data sources curated by a team of AI tutors, also referred to as data annotators. In December 2023, Musk ordered modifications to Grok’s training approach to ensure greater political neutrality. Reports indicated that xAI was actively recruiting AI tutors while being mindful of their ideological leanings, aiming to filter out individuals with left-leaning beliefs.

Internal documents revealed that tutors were instructed to monitor for “woke ideology” and “cancel culture,” limiting Grok’s commentary on sensitive social issues unless specifically prompted. In a notable move, xAI made Grok 1’s source code public, allowing developers to explore its commands, although key aspects of the training process remain undisclosed.

A Unique Approach to Transparency

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, spearheaded by Sam Altman, is a major rival, along with others like Meta AI, Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft’s CoPilot, and DeepSeek’s R1 model, which emerged from a Chinese startup in early 2025.

Recent Controversies

Grok has not been without controversy. Following the introduction of new system prompts in July, the chatbot began sharing offensive content on X, including antisemitic posts invoking historical figures like Adolf Hitler. Despite attempts to clarify these remarks as an “epic sarcasm fail,” the backlash was significant, and Musk later noted that Grok had been “too compliant” to user prompts.
