Proton e.MAS 5 Premium: A Glimpse into the Future of Affordable Electric Vehicles

The Proton e.MAS 5 has officially made its debut, marking a significant step in Malaysia’s journey toward sustainable transportation. As part of the nationwide Misi 5 preview tour organized by Pro-Net, the public and media had the opportunity to explore the new B-segment electric hatchback. While the access was limited to just 15 to 20 minutes, the insights gained were valuable and provided a clear picture of what to expect from this upcoming model.

The event also allowed for a brief look at the unmasked exterior of the e.MAS 5, though some final touches were still being completed. Despite this, the overall design appeared promising, with a modern and sleek aesthetic that aligns with current trends in electric vehicle (EV) design.

Battery, Charging, and Range

One of the most critical aspects of any EV is its battery and charging capabilities. The Proton e.MAS 5 Premium variant comes equipped with a 40.16 kWh LFP battery from CATL, offering a WLTP-rated range of up to 325km. This makes it a practical option for daily commuting and short trips.

In terms of charging, the e.MAS 5 Premium supports DC fast charging at a maximum speed of 71kW. According to the Pro-Net representative, it takes approximately 21 minutes to charge the battery from 30% to 80%. Additionally, the EV can be charged using single-phase AC at up to 6.6kW. While the specifications sheet does not confirm whether Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability will be included, it is likely given its platform base on the Geely Xingyuan.

Performance and Handling

Designed with budget-conscious buyers in mind, the e.MAS 5 Premium offers modest performance figures. It features a single 85kW (around 114hp) electric motor that delivers 150Nm of torque. The car can accelerate from 0 to 50km/h in just 3.9 seconds, making it surprisingly quick for an entry-level EV.

Interestingly, the e.MAS 5 is rear-wheel drive, which contributes to a tighter turning radius of 4.95 meters. The Premium variant also includes multi-link rear suspension and MacPherson struts on the front, ensuring a smooth and stable ride.

Interior Features and Comfort

Inside the e.MAS 5 Premium, the focus is on comfort and practicality. The pre-production unit showcased white leatherette seats, both front and back, with manual adjusters. While it is unclear if these will be the exact versions offered in the final model, the seats are described as plush and comfortable, particularly the front ones, which provide a snug fit despite not being sport seats.

The interior also includes a storage area under the rear seats, capable of holding up to 28L of items. The boot space measures 375L, which can be expanded to 1,320L when the rear seats are folded down. The Premium variant also features a powered tailgate and a large 70L frunk, adding to the car’s versatility.

Technology and Connectivity

One of the standout features of the e.MAS 5 is its advanced technology. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at launch, supporting both wired and wireless connections. The infotainment system uses the Atlas Auto operating system, featuring a 14.6-inch display. The car also includes the Bahasa Malaysia voice assistant, Aishah, enhancing user experience for local drivers.

Additionally, the e.MAS 5 Premium comes with an integrated live charging map and support for the e.MAS App, making it easier for owners to manage their charging needs. The car also includes a 6-speaker audio system, although the quality was not fully tested during the preview.

Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)

Safety is a key priority for the e.MAS 5 Premium. It comes equipped with a comprehensive list of ADAS features, including:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Rear Collision Warning (RCW)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
  • Front Vehicle Departure (FVD)
  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Door Opening Warning (DOW)

While it lacks Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), the e.MAS 5 Premium still offers a robust set of safety features. It also includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and the G-TCS anti-slip and anti-skid system, designed to enhance traction and reduce wheel slippage on challenging surfaces.
