A Celebration of Service and Strength
The Princess Royal’s upcoming 75th birthday is being celebrated with a new photograph capturing her in elegant attire during a recent Windsor Castle state banquet. The image shows Anne, along with her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, at the event hosted by the King in July to honor France’s President Emmanuel Macron during his state visit to the UK.
In the photo, the princess is dressed in her formal banquet gown, adorned with regalia including the Order of the Garter Sash and Star, the Order of the Thistle Star, the King’s Family Order, and the Royal Family Order from Queen Elizabeth II. This visual tribute highlights her long-standing commitment to royal duties and public service.
As she approaches this significant milestone, the princess has been recognized for her non-political influence and remarkable stamina throughout her decades of service. Charitable leaders who have worked closely with her emphasize her deep concern for the challenges facing Britain and the world today.
Those who know Anne well describe her as someone who continues to take on more responsibilities rather than slowing down. She is known for her “wicked wit,” practical approach to problem-solving, and a tendency to not always agree with others’ viewpoints. Her unique personality and dedication have made her a respected figure among those she supports.
Supporting Causes Close to Her Heart
Moazzam Malik, chief executive of Save The Children UK, praised the princess for her “self-effacing” support, which he says is highly inspiring for the organization and its partners. He noted that while she does not seek the spotlight, her commitment to the cause is evident.
Anne has been involved with Save The Children UK for over 55 years, starting as its president in 1970 when she was just 20 years old. She later became its patron in 2017, following in the footsteps of her mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Over the years, she has met thousands of supporters and helped raise millions of pounds for the organization.
Her work includes visiting projects in the UK, where one in three children live in relative poverty, and traveling to countries such as Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. These trips highlight her dedication to addressing global humanitarian needs.
A Leader in Multiple Charities
Tanya Curry, CEO of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, noted that Anne has taken on more responsibilities as she nears her 75th birthday. She praised the princess’s mental and physical stamina, which allows her to continue her vital work with the organization since becoming its patron in 2008.
Anne is also deeply involved with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), where she has been a supporter since 1971. After recovering from a hospitalization in June 2024, she returned to duty within three weeks and insisted on attending the RDA’s national championships as part of her first return engagement. Michael Baker, CEO of the RDA, described her determination and ability to bring people together with her quick wit and engaging presence.
A Broad Range of Charitable Involvement
The princess supports over 300 charities and organizations, and she chose to mark her 75th birthday by bringing many of them together at a special forum at Buckingham Palace. This decision reflects her continued focus on community and global issues.
Lord Kakkar, chairman of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, highlighted Anne’s practical approach and likened her to her father, Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, for her interest in science, engineering, and technology. He emphasized her deep commitment to the commission’s mission, which aims to make a profound impact on people’s lives across the UK and the Commonwealth.
The commission, established by Prince Albert during the Great Exhibition, awards numerous postgraduate fellowships and scholarships annually. Lord Kakkar noted that Anne’s involvement aligns with the vision of Prince Albert, ensuring that the commission continues to support advanced research and development.
A Legacy of Thoughtful Engagement
Anne is known for her forthright manner and willingness to challenge conclusions. Lord Kakkar observed that she engages in meaningful conversations, demonstrating her thorough preparation and thoughtful approach to complex issues. This trait, reminiscent of her father’s philosophy, underscores her role as a thoughtful and influential member of the royal family.
