Yasmin Broom made a splash on Love Island, entering Casa Amor and leaving a lasting impression. This Manchester native has been in high demand since leaving the villa, transitioning from her girlband days to becoming a globe-trotting DJ. Despite her Love Island romance with Gio not working out, Yasmin is focused on her career. With DJ sets for brands like YSL, Prada Beauty, and even Beyoncé, she’s proving her talent both on and off the decks.
However, Yasmin’s journey hasn’t always been easy. She’s been open about her experiences as a Black woman in the music industry and the challenges she’s faced in the dating world. She shared her thoughts on the pressures of being in the public eye, her dream collaboration with Rihanna, and her current focus on finding “husband energy.”
Life After the Villa: A Whirlwind of Bookings
“It’s been hectic, to say the least,” Yasmin said, reflecting on her life after Love Island. “I literally flew back on Friday, and it’s been go, go, go since. DJ bookings have come in now—it’s crazy, but I love it.”
From Girlband to DJ: A Lockdown Reinvention
Yasmin’s DJ career began during lockdown. “I used to be in a band – Four of Diamonds – and during lockdown, we couldn’t perform or do anything. So I thought, what can I do?” she explained. “I taught myself to DJ using YouTube. Then when we stopped the band, I was like, ‘I need to make some money.'”
Yasmin’s determination led her to pursue opportunities in Manchester and London. “I just went to clubs in Manchester and London, like, ‘Let me DJ, please!'” she recalled. “I couldn’t really DJ that great at the time, but they gave me a chance. The first club that gave me a shot was Tape in London. The fee wasn’t great, I had to pay for my train and hotel—but I was like, ‘You know what, I’ll do it.’ And it spiralled from there! I started playing for YSL, Prada Beauty, Sol de Janeiro, L’Oréal…”
Playing for Queen Bey: A Surreal Moment
When asked about the most surreal place she’s DJ’d, Yasmin didn’t hesitate: “Probably Tottenham Hotspur Stadium—for Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour. I’m a massive Beyoncé fan, so when I got that call, I was gassed!”
Love Island: A Search for Connection
Yasmin discussed her reasons for joining Love Island. “I tried the dating apps – I met some of my exes on them and Instagram. But men don’t really approach in real life anymore,” she said. “I mean, it didn’t work out with Gio, but overall, I did enjoy my time in the villa. It was surreal, and I made some amazing girlfriends—me, Emma, and Rio are planning to meet up when Emma gets out, have dinner, and catch up.”
Casa Amor Disappointment: A Last-Minute Change of Heart
Yasmin was surprised that Gio didn’t bring her back to the main villa. “Yeah, I was surprised. We hadn’t had any other conversations that made me feel it wouldn’t happen. It was very last minute,” she explained. “But I think he stayed true to himself – if he didn’t feel the connection, there’s no point forcing it.”
She admitted she felt like their connection was a “done deal.” “100%! Even the girls were like, ‘Oh yeah, you guys are solid.’ We were all like, ‘You’re coming back to the main villa!’ But he just walked in alone.”
Yasmin observed a pattern among the boys in the villa. “They’re not serious. They change their minds so fast—it’s like kids in a candy shop. A new sweet comes in, and they’re like, ‘Oh my God!’ But then they want to go back to their original sweets again—like Harrison with Toni!”
Four of Diamonds: The End of an Era
Yasmin addressed the breakup of her former girlband, Four of Diamonds. “We were signed to EMI – they dropped us after the first lockdown. We tried again, but we were all spread out—Manchester, Birmingham—and financially, it wasn’t viable. So we stopped.”
She fondly recalled her time on X Factor. “She [Nicole Scherzinger] was lovely—we wanted her as our mentor. She called us her favourite girl band! We were gassed but got Louis instead. He was great too. Simon—so nice. Not what you’d expect—really sweet off camera. She told us to block out the noise, do what we wanted as a four. That’s stuck with me to this day.”
Navigating the Music Industry as a Black Woman
Yasmin spoke candidly about the challenges she faces as a Black woman in the music industry. “It’s tough. Some venues don’t book me – maybe because I’m a girl, maybe because of my skin, I don’t know. But you just know. I go up and down the country with my backpack—no label, no help. Just me.”
She believes this prejudice extends to her dating life as well. “100%. In the villa, I wasn’t anyone’s ‘type’—you always get that. I even asked Gio if I was his type. He said yes, but still. It’s hard. But my husband is out there.”
Early Career Recognition
Yasmin recalled the interest from Virgin Records after her time on X Factor. “No, since he wasn’t our mentor. But as soon as we came off the show, Virgin reached out to our manager. They wanted us, and that was the goal—to be signed to a major label.”
She described the feeling as “amazing.” “That was everything we wanted like that was the whole goal, like to get signed a major record label, and they’re like one of the greatest, like they helped us so much, like taught me so much as well, like I had so much knowledge from the girl band in my life now, like with DJ.”
Collaborations and Performances: A Growing List
Yasmin has worked with numerous artists, both as a solo DJ and with Four of Diamonds.
- With Four of Diamonds: Burna Boy, Saweetie, Mr Eazi, Jonas Blue
- As a DJ: Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Kaytranada, Sabrina Carpenter
She also performed at Parklife Festival shortly before entering Love Island. “Yes! I did Parklife literally two weeks before I went into the villa. I wasn’t sure what was happening with Love Island yet, so I just confirmed Parklife and hoped it would work out — and it did!”
Favourite Collaborations and Dream Gigs
When asked about her favourite celebrity to work with, Yasmin replied, “Probably Ne-Yo. He’s really lovely and down to earth. He actually makes time for you. Sometimes you meet celebrities and they’re not what you expect – it ruins the perception. But not him. He was great.”
Her dream performance? “Rihanna. Oh my gosh. If I DJ for Rihanna, then I’ll know I’ve made it. I’m obsessed! I’d love to DJ a Fenty Beauty event — that would be so good.”
