A Night of Music and Concerns at Wembley Stadium

Just days after attending an Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium in London on July 30, I received the shocking news that a fan had died after falling from a height later that week on August 2. The incident left me deeply affected, as I still remember the overwhelming chaos of the event, with massive crowds and slippery surfaces creating a tense atmosphere.

Lee Claydon, a 45-year-old father of three from Bournemouth, tragically lost his life after falling from an upper tier of the stadium during the band’s performance. His father, Clive Claydon, expressed his belief that the fall was an accident, stating that Lee may have had a couple of beers but had not taken any drugs. He also raised concerns about the safety of the barriers, suggesting that there were questions surrounding the incident.

Observations from the Event

Despite the excitement of the concert, I noticed several issues that made me uneasy. Three main concerns stood out: the excessive amount of alcohol being consumed, the slippery floors, and the steep staircases leading to the concourse.

I arrived early, just after 5 pm, and watched the support acts before Oasis took the stage at 8:15 pm. The energy in the crowd was high, with many people moving between the bars and the stands multiple times to refill their drinks. While it was expected to see alcohol at such events, the sheer volume of spilled drinks created some problems. During one of the support acts, I was hit by a trickle of beer, and I saw others struggling to carry their drinks without spilling them.

The floor became increasingly slippery as the night progressed, especially near the stairs leading to the internal concourse where the toilets and bars are located. I witnessed several people slip, and one person fell down, though they were not seriously injured. I felt relieved that I wasn’t drinking, allowing me to be more cautious. Every time I went back to my seat, I held tightly onto the handrail to avoid being knocked over.

Fan Experiences and Reactions

Other fans shared similar concerns about the conditions at Wembley. One fan posted on Facebook about a girl who dislocated her knee due to the slippery floor. Another mentioned a friend who fell and got back up quickly, continuing to enjoy the rest of the show. A third fan described seeing a man fall on the steps, sustaining injuries that required immediate attention.

However, not all fans agreed that the stadium was the issue. Some pointed out that there had been no major incidents in the past 18 years of events at Wembley, with large crowds attending regularly. Others shared positive experiences, noting that they didn’t see any drunk or rowdy behavior during their visit.

Wembley’s Response

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Wembley Stadium emphasized their commitment to health and safety. They stated that the venue operates to high standards, meeting legal requirements and complying with ISO 45001 certification. Wembley works closely with event stakeholders, local authorities, and security teams to ensure the safety of all attendees.

While the tragedy is heartbreaking, it highlights the importance of vigilance and awareness at large events. As fans continue to enjoy music and entertainment, it is crucial to remain mindful of the environment and take necessary precautions to prevent accidents.
