Tragedy Strikes Ruidoso: Flash Flooding Claims Lives

On July 8, a devastating flash flood in Ruidoso, New Mexico, resulted in the tragic deaths of two children and a man. According to local authorities, the victims—a 7-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, and a man believed to be in his 40s or 50s—were swept away by the rapidly rising waters.

Victims Identified as Part of Military Family

The two young children were identified as members of a family connected to Fort Bliss, a nearby military installation. Officials from Fort Bliss shared that a soldier’s spouse sustained serious injuries during the incident, while their two children tragically lost their lives. The family was on approved leave and staying at a recreational vehicle campground when the flash flood struck.

Brigadier General Rory Crooks, deputy commanding general of the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “Our hearts are heavy with grief following this devastating loss,” he stated. “The entire Fort Bliss community extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

Community and Government Response

El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson also offered his condolences, highlighting the close-knit nature of the communities involved. “We are especially heartbroken to learn that two of the young children were from El Paso and part of a Fort Bliss family—a reminder of how tightly our communities are connected,” he said. Johnson emphasized the city’s readiness to support the grieving family and the broader community as they navigate this difficult time.

Search and Rescue Operations

As efforts continued to locate missing individuals, Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford confirmed that multiple people were unaccounted for after the flooding. Search and rescue operations were initiated promptly, and local residents aided in the search for victims. Tragically, it was confirmed that three individuals had perished, their bodies found approximately two miles downstream from where they were last seen.

Officials reported that three additional individuals sustained injuries and were taken to a local hospital, where they are currently in stable condition. A total of 20 residents have been displaced from their homes due to the flooding, prompting local authorities to arrange temporary accommodations in a hotel.

Damage Assessment and Ongoing Challenges

The aftermath of the flash flood has revealed extensive damage. Reports indicate that between 30 to over 50 homes and businesses have sustained damage. In addition to human casualties, several animals, including eight horses and various pets, have also been lost to the floodwaters.

The flood was exacerbated by heavy rainfall in areas previously affected by wildfires, which created burn scars that contributed to the rapid water accumulation. Emergency crews conducted 65 swift water rescues, helping individuals trapped in vehicles, homes, and trees. The majority of these rescues occurred in the Upper Canyon area, as residents were alerted to seek higher ground.

In response to the crisis, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an emergency declaration, which will facilitate federal assistance for recovery efforts. The local government is actively assessing roadways and bridges, with twelve road closures currently in effect throughout the village.
