Clueless: My First Time and the Shocking Truth

Right, so I’ve only just got around to watching Clueless. I know, I know, it’s a classic, practically a cinematic institution. It’s consistently ranked as one of the best films of the 90s, but somehow it always eluded me. I’ve been too busy catching up on the latest releases and award-winning dramas, I suppose. But with its thirtieth anniversary upon us, I finally decided to buckle down and give it a proper viewing. And blimey, I was completely bowled over.

An Undeniable Icon

I’ve always recognised Clueless‘s iconic status. It’s ingrained in pop culture. References to it are everywhere, even now. I’ve seen snippets and clips over the years, enjoyed it in passing with friends, but never committed to watching it from beginning to end. I realised that I needed to experience the whole film to truly grasp its significance.

So, I did. And what a ride!

Officially Part of the Cult

Films have a profound effect on us. I adore the Harry Potter films and the way they sparked my love of fantasy. I’m also a huge fan of Legally Blonde and admire Reese Witherspoon’s films, as they encourage me to embrace my femininity. If I’d seen Clueless as a kid, I’m fairly certain it would have had a similar impact.

This film completely captivated me. I was drawn into the world of Clueless almost instantly, spending hours online researching memes, quotes, and everything else related to the film.

Director Amy Heckerling transformed this film into the cultural phenomenon it remains today. And now, I’m a convert, ready to sing its praises. Here are three key reasons why:

Alicia Silverstone: A Star is Born

Firstly, Alicia Silverstone is an absolute revelation. I knew her name, but I never understood why she was such a big star. I’d heard my mum talk about her, solely in reference to Clueless, but I didn’t grasp the fuss.

Watching her as Cher, it all clicked. She’s simply brilliant. Clueless should have launched her into a string of blockbuster successes, like Legally Blonde did for Reese Witherspoon, or The Princess Diaries for Anne Hathaway.

However, Clueless remains Alicia Silverstone’s defining role, alongside a few appearances in television shows and smaller films. It’s surprising, because she should have achieved the same level of fame as co-stars like Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd. The upcoming TV series based on the movie, with her involvement, is great news.

A Ridiculous Plot That’s Utterly Addictive

Secondly, part of Clueless‘s appeal is its ridiculous plot. The fact that it’s loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma elevates it even further.

For those who don’t know, Clueless draws inspiration from Emma, focusing on a popular teenager who wants to do “good deeds” to improve her life and social standing. As she attempts to make a new student popular, she begins to question her own identity and motivations.

Beneath the surface-level plot, there’s a deeper meaning that is both funny and cleverly handled. The jokes still land, which is rare for a teen film that often relies on dated 90s humour. It’s endlessly entertaining, and the quotes from Clueless are iconic.

Fashion That Demands a Wardrobe Overhaul

Finally, the biggest reason I’ve joined the Clueless cult is the fashion. The Clueless fashion is everything I could have wished for, and more. It’s simply exceptional.

As someone who doesn’t consider themselves particularly stylish, I’ve been trying to push myself outside my comfort zone and experiment with new clothing. This film has inspired me to take it a step further and completely rethink my wardrobe.

The dresses are amazing. The outfits are incredible. The confidence that exudes from these impeccably dressed teenagers is palpable. It’s made me want to be more confident in myself. I’ve never cared much about fashion, but now I’m completely obsessed with the entire Clueless wardrobe.

A New Favourite Film

Clueless has now earned a place among my favourite films, which is unusual for a film I’ve only just seen years after its original release.

Often, when I watch a hyped-up film, it either meets my expectations or falls far short, which is usually the case. But Clueless exceeded all expectations.

It’s remarkable to finally understand why everyone considers it one of the decade’s best films and a defining movie for a generation. I wish my generation had something similar. Now, I feel compelled to watch it again and again until I can recreate Cher’s entire wardrobe.
