AJ Odudu, television presenter and personality, believes the perfect trip with friends hinges on balance. For her, Los Angeles offers precisely that – a harmonious blend of bustling city life and relaxing beach vibes, not to mention the culinary delights of restaurants like Laurel Hardware. She shares her insider’s guide to making the most of the City of Angels.

Why Los Angeles?

Los Angeles captures the ideal balance between urban excitement and coastal relaxation. It caters to both party animals and wellness enthusiasts. The city excels in the wellness scene, offering numerous Pilates classes, green juice bars, and scenic hiking trails. However, it also boasts incredible restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, ensuring a well-rounded experience.

Initially, my first trip barely scratched the surface, as it was primarily a starting point for a road trip to the South by Southwest Festival in Texas. I only caught a glimpse of the Hollywood Hills. It wasn’t until a few years later, on a wellness-focused trip with my friend Adrienne, complete with poolside relaxation, that I truly fell in love with the city.

Recent Adventures

My most recent visit was in May, accompanied by my friend and agent. I also had the opportunity to reconnect with several friends who reside in Los Angeles. It was a mix of business and pleasure, and my first time back in quite a while, making the reunion with the city all the more special.

Accommodation Recommendations

For accommodation, Sunset Tower in West Hollywood is a fantastic choice. It exudes an old-school charm while remaining undeniably cool. I particularly appreciate the interior design and the hotel’s amazing bar, which has a speakeasy atmosphere. The breakfast is also a highlight, featuring a vast all-you-can-eat spread. Be sure to sample the omelettes or indulge in a stack of pancakes with maple syrup.

Culinary Hotspots

My favourite meal has to be the pasta bolognese at Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood – it’s unbelievably rich and flavourful.

Here are my top three restaurant recommendations:

  • Laurel Hardware: For its funky seating, gorgeous roof terrace, and a pink marble bar upstairs. Don’t miss the fish starters.
  • Loreto: A fantastic seafood restaurant.
  • Saffy’s: Specialising in Middle Eastern cuisine.

All three offer excellent drinks, the perfect accompaniment to any meal. They certainly know how to mix a great dirty martini or margarita.

Hidden Gems

Chifa restaurant is a real gem. It’s known for attracting a stylish crowd, with everyone dressed impeccably, and you might even spot a celebrity or two.

Unmissable Experiences

Attending a gig is a must. The SoFi Stadium is incredible, although getting there can be a challenge due to LA’s notorious traffic. Scooter rentals offer a convenient alternative. During my last visit, I was fortunate enough to see Kendrick Lamar and SZA perform.

Where to Unwind

Delilah, a club located near Laurel Hardware, is the perfect place to let your hair down. Drake is a frequent visitor. The music is consistently excellent, with live music nights offering diverse vibes. I’ve experienced everything from jazz bands to soul, funk, and R&B performances, as well as DJ sets. After dinner, the tables are cleared to create a dance floor.

A 24-Hour Itinerary

If you only have 24 hours in LA:

  1. Check into Sunset Tower upon arrival and head straight to the pool to soak up the sun and recover from your flight.
  2. Embark on a hike, capturing the obligatory photo with the Hollywood sign.
  3. Stroll along the Walk of Fame.
  4. Relax in your room with an under-eye mask.
  5. Prepare for an evening out with a delicious dinner at Laurel Hardware, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
  6. Dance the night away at Delilah.
  7. In the morning, attend a fitness class – perhaps some Pilates – to maintain that all-important balance.

Shopping Destinations

I always enjoy vintage shopping in LA. The flea markets at Rose Bowl and Long Beach are treasure troves for finding unique clothing items.

Packing Essentials

My packing essentials include:

  • A large bag for carrying water or juices.
  • Clothes suitable for both day and night.
  • Trainers and fitness gear.
  • Hydration sachets and under-eye masks to combat the effects of late nights.

Los Angeles is a city that requires a lot of walking or driving, so comfortable footwear is essential.

Favourite Beauty Spots

It’s difficult to choose just one, as there are so many beautiful hiking trails, from the Griffith Observatory to Runyon Canyon.

Los Angeles Style

The dress code in LA can be described as “casual swag”. For a night out, I would opt for a maxi skirt with a matching bralette, along with a jacket for cooler evenings. I would pair this with kitten heels or neutral trainers.

Exercise on the Go

I always make time for exercise when travelling. I’m a Reformer Pilates enthusiast – there’s something about the apparatus that feels like a climbing frame, which helps distract me from the intensity of the workout.

Wellness Tips

Alo has an amazing studio in LA for Pilates practice. It’s a truly iconic spot.

Dream Residence

I would love to live in Chateau Marmont. The history, the atmosphere, the sheer allure of it all. Imagine if the walls could whisper their secrets in my sleep – that would be incredible. I would definitely want a suite there on standby, always ready for my arrival.
