The season 2 finale of Poker Face, titled “The End of the Road,” delivers a shocking conclusion, leaving viewers eager for more. While the title suggests finality, the show’s widespread acclaim and popularity strongly hint at a season 3 renewal. The finale plunges Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) into a web of deceit and danger, testing her remarkable ability to detect lies like never before.
The episode opens with Charlie and Alex (Patti Harrison) on the run, strategizing their next move. Charlie activates her phone, receiving a call from her friend Luca (Simon Helberg), who confirms her suspicions: the elusive assassin known as “The Iguana” is responsible for the murder of Hasps’ (Rhea Perlman) son. This revelation places Charlie in an even more precarious position, as she realizes the danger surrounding her is far greater than she initially thought.
The seemingly ordinary Alex, who befriended Charlie at a New York City cafe, is revealed to be “The Iguana,” a highly skilled assassin with a reputation for nearly fifty assassinations. Despite Luca’s assumption that The Iguana is male, Alex is known as the world’s greatest assassin. Hired to eliminate Beatrix Hasp, Alex possesses the unnerving ability to deceive even Charlie, a human lie detector.
As Charlie and Alex seek refuge at a truck stop, Charlie remains vigilant, convinced that an assassin is tailing them to target Hasp. Unbeknownst to her, the assassin she fears is right by her side. While it’s unusual to see Charlie so easily fooled, Alex’s seemingly innocent demeanor masks her true identity.
The pair eventually arrive in Greenville, Indiana, at Beatrix Hasp’s safe house. Overcome with a sense of foreboding, Charlie cautiously approaches the house. She instructs Alex to honk the horn if anything goes wrong. Finding the front door unanswered, Charlie circles to the back, only to find Alex gone. Inside, she discovers a trail of dead bodies, leading to Hasp, who has been fatally shot.
Alex feigns being held at gunpoint, but Charlie quickly discerns the truth. Recognizing Alex’s deception, Charlie confronts her, prompting Alex to drop her facade and reveal her true, chillingly confident persona.
Alex’s success in deceiving Charlie stems from her extensive experience manipulating powerful figures worldwide. For Alex, fooling Charlie wasn’t a matter of Charlie’s naivety but rather a testament to Alex’s exceptional skills. Alex’s past exploits include assassinating royalty, seducing and murdering celebrities, and even evading a Vatican contract.
Initially uninterested in a simple mob hit, Alex was drawn to the challenge of deceiving Charlie, the seemingly infallible human lie detector.
The episode further reveals that Alex hired “Todd,” the second-best assassin in the world, to kill Beatrix’s adopted son, framing him for the crime. Alex then murdered Todd to cover her tracks. The man at the truck stop, whom Alex slashed, was merely an innocent bystander, serving as a distraction.
In a twisted sense, Charlie inadvertently gave Alex a purpose, while Alex, in turn, took the lives of many who didn’t deserve it. Charlie, far from being grateful, orchestrates Alex’s capture by setting a fire, alerting the authorities.
With authorities instructed not to engage, Luca tails the Baracuda, carrying Alex and Charlie. Alex uses Charlie as a human shield, believing she has escaped. However, Charlie challenges her to a game of “Two Truths and a Lie,” confident in her ability to expose Alex’s deception.
Alex drives towards the Grand Canyon, presenting Charlie with a final challenge. If Charlie hopes to survive, she must win the game. When Charlie correctly identifies the lie, Alex attempts to stop the car, leading to a dramatic moment where it appears they will both plunge over the cliff.
As Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” plays, Charlie jumps from the Baracuda just before it plummets over the cliff. While Alex and Hasp meet their demise, the fate of the iconic Baracuda is a painful loss.
Luca gives Charlie a head start, knowing she is now wanted by the FBI. True to Poker Face form, Charlie finds herself on the run once again. She picks up a dog and hitches a ride in a semi-truck heading towards Wichita, hinting at new adventures to come. The episode concludes with the possibility that The Iguana, having survived the crash, may return in season 3, promising more twists and turns in Charlie’s future.
